Amedeo Avogadro must have been annoyed that his hypothesis was ignored for almost 50 years. Perhaps Avogadro should have given more experimental evidence for his idea to enable other researchers to have confidence in his ideas. Although Ampère formulated the same hypothesis independently, Avogardo is now credited with being the originator of this fundamental concept.

  • Avogadro's Hypothesis
The hypothesis states that equal volumes of all gases at the same temperature pressure contain equal numbers of molecules. We now know that the number of molecules of gas in one mole is about 6.1 time 1023. This is known as the Avogadro Constant or Avogadro's Number.

His full name was: Lorenzo Romano Amedeo Carlo Avogadro di Quaregua e di Cerreto
